INTRODUCTION AND GUIDE TO THE SITE

Hello all, and welcome to The Digital Eccentric. I have been a photography, and equipment enthusiast for many years. I've had a wonderful time over the years playing with cameras, talking about them, lusting over them, and even cuddling them. If you are the same, I think you will enjoy the site! I have helped steer many who have asked over the years, towards equipment best suited to their needs. I hope to do the same here for you.

Since there are so many photo enthusiasts popping up now, and everyone's an "expert" I'd like to give you a little insight on my background. I started photography as a kid in the late 70s with my mother's 110 camera with those little 'flash cubes' they used for flash back then. I 'graduated' to a Kodak Disc Camera (how ancient is that?) in the early eighties. My first 'real' camera was a Canon AT-1 35mm slr, stolen in 1982, and replaced by the Minolta X-700 in 1985. So I'm a bit younger than the Speed Graphic guys, but a bit older than the Rebel XT crowd.

I have been on the internet since the "usenet" days. A few of my camera reviews 'anonymously' appeared on sites like photo.net, where I have been a member since their early days. One review I wrote was 'anonymously' posted by someone else who apparently thought it was decent. That person has gone on to become an expert in the field. In the recent years, my Pbase "Appreciation" articles on photo related equipment garnered thousands of hits. Thanks to a great network of friends, and professionals, I have used nearly all the major, and minor brands from Canon to Chinon, from Nikon to Minolta, from Hasselblad to Rollei and everything in between. My eBay (1999), and various photo forum feedbacks since 1997 are 100% positive. Now what do the feedbacks have to do with camera reviews? Nothing, but it says a little about integrity. Now shooting with a lot of gear does not make me an expert. However, I am not a digital slr newbie who has suddenly become an "expert" on the forums. Be confident that I will try my best to give honest, and candid impressions of various equipment.

There are a few things I'd like to point out that will make your visits here more pleasant:

1) The site will be photography first, but equipment based
2) I'll give you real world opinions and insights, NOT formal, technical reviews. I'll do my best to give you an honest opinion, and what you can expect out of the gear in the real world.
3) I am just adding my views to the mix. You should NOT take reviews from anyone as definitive. Instead, read as much as you can from everyone, and make an informed decision. Usually, a general consensus has more than a grain of truth to it.
4) Although I'll do my best to be fair, please remember that it is just MY OPINION. So please do not feel hurt, or offended should I say something negative about a particular brand you like.
5) I am a bit of an eccentric, so expect odd things.
6) There are WAY better reviewers than I. That's a disclaimer :-)
7) Your comments and opinions are welcomed, and encouraged.

All that aside, I think you will have a pretty good time here! Your comments, and opinions are welcomed as well. Please make an attempt to be civil. I've got a lot of good stuff coming your way, so stay tuned.
That's it for now...

Best,
Sam
